Have you ever heard of eyebrow stencils? They are stencils in the shape of the "perfect" eyebrow. As a rule, one package of reusable eyebrow stencils contain a few different shapes. Adhesive-backed eyebrow stencils seem to be the stencil of choice.

How to use eyebrow stencils -

1. When laying out an eyebrow stencil, first begin by matching the arch of the stencil to your own eyebrow arch.
2. Using your darker eyebrow pencil, sketch in the thickest part of the eyebrow all the way to the arch.
3. Upon reaching the arch, switch to a lighter eyebrow pencil (a pencil two shades lighter than your daker pencil) to finish the "tail".
   

Note: Some stencils have a line down the center part of the stencil. This is an arch line guide to tell you where your arch should be in the scheme of things.

Pencil Eyeliner Tip too Hard

Lately, I've noticed that my pencil eyeliner tip is too hard to glide on smoothly; but I understand also that as they age that they do harden. However, I found a quick solution for my problem. I ran the tip of my eyeliner pencil under hot water for about 30 seconds and the water softened the tip. The pencil eyeliner went on smoother than when it was new! Depending on how hot your water is will determine how long you need to keep the pencil under hot running water - but I feel this eyeliner tip is a keeper.

Moving Away from Traditional Eyeglass Frame Colors

Have you thought lately about moving away from your traditional eyeglass frame colors? For women who would like a change from the standard black or brown eyeglass frame, we've come up with a few color suggestions to try.

Eyes have been called the windows of the soul because of how much they communicate. Eyes give your face energy and individuality. They do not have to be a certain size or shape to be considered pretty - all eyes have their own unique beauty. When makeup is applied to look natural it will bring out the eye’s true color and enhance the eye’s beauty. When you feel good about your makeup you will be more confident and will have one less thing to worry about.

A subtle application of eyeliner, shadows and mascara work together to create magic and make your eyes look their best.

Eye Shadow
Eye shadow is meant to highlight and define the eyes. Eye shadow is used to create depth to bring out the beauty of the eyes. A dark color used on the lid will make the eye appear smaller, while a lighter color will make it appear larger. That is what eye shadow is about creating illusions. These are the basic techniques for the following eye shapes:

Small eyes: Don’t use too much shadow or liner – it will make you eyes look smaller. Apply a light color on eyelid, use a darker color in the crease and use a highlighter under the brow.

Large eyes: Wear darker shadow on the lid and extend it to the crease. Use a flat color under the brow to highlight.

Deep-set eyes: Use light colors on the eyelid and under the brow. Use a medium color in the crease. Emphasize the outer corners with shadow.

Wide-set eyes: Use darker colors on the inner corners of the eye.

Hooded eyes: Apply light colors on the lid. Use darker colors from the center of the eyelid to the outer corners and blend.

Round eyes: Make round eyes longer by using color all around and extending toward the outer corners.

Asian eyes: Apply highlighter under the brow. Use light shadow on the inner half of the lid and a darker color on the outer half.

2. If you have very light skin avoid dark shades

3. Be careful with shimmer – they will bring attention to imperfections and wrinkles.

4. The eye area is the first to show age don’t tug on the skin.

Eyeliners:
Eyeliners are meant to define the eyes so they should do just that, not be the focal point of your makeup. Eyeliners come in various colors and forms liquid, pencil etc. Keep the eyeliner natural. Pencils are available in many colors (for the best look stick to black or brown) and can be sharpened for a fine line. For a smudged effect use a sponge tip shadow applicator or an eye shadow brush. When your pencils are too soft refrigerate them. When they are too hard soften them by holding them between your fingers.

To line the eye, start on the lower lid, just beneath the lashes. When you are finished always smudge the line with your sponge. Stay as close to the lash line as possible. On the upper lid, draw a line form the inner corner to the outer corner, thickening the line toward the outer corner. After the age of 40 keep the line in between the lashes.

Mascara and the creation of beautiful lashes:
Mascara frames your eyes and can make your face come alive. Mascara softly accentuates the eye while thickening and darkening the lashes; it is the finishing touch for eyes. There are several different types to choose from, thickening, and waterproof to smudge proof. Waterproof will need a special remover and smudge proof will wash off easily. It is not a good idea to wear waterproof mascara for extended periods of time since it has a tendency to dry the lashes.

Select a shade of mascara that complements your coloring. Dark shades on pale eyes with brown lashes will darken them and will look harsh. Stay away from blues and other colors since they will ruin your look.

Lashes that are hard to curl may need the help of an eyelash curler. Curl your lashes before you apply mascara – hold for ten to twenty seconds.

To apply mascara look straight into your mirror with your chin slightly lifted so you can see your lashes. Insert the wand only once and twist, don’t pump. Pumping can break the brush bristles and distribute the mascara unevenly and will dry out the mascara faster. Start by rolling the wand from root to tip in an upward motion. Reinsert the brush and apply again. If your eyelashes are thick and long they may clunk together. If this happens let them dry and then separate them with the corner of an eyebrow brush.

Swollen Eyes and Metal Spoons

If your eyes are swollen, reduce the puffiness with cold metal spoons. Put two spoons in the refrigerator until they are cold, and then place one spoon on each eye. Hold them on the eyes until they warm.

(Do not put spoons in the freezer - extreme cold can damage the skin)

One Minute Eye Makeup

If time is not on your side, try this one minute eye makeup trick. It is fast and beautiful.

• Apply a light eyeshadow color under the brow along the brow bone and to the inside corner of your eyes. Add mascara and you are ready to go.

When only applying one light color in this manner, it will appear as if you have applied a medium shade to your eyelid.

Put your eyes on a veggie and tea diet...

To freshen up those tired and overworked eyes, try putting your eyes on a veggie and tea diet!

• To lighten or eliminate dark circles under the eyes, try laying slices of clean raw potato on your eyes.
• To soothe puffy and tired eyes, try cucumber slices on the eyes.
• Do you need an eye refresher? Try laying cool and damp tea bags (first boil then cool completely) over your eyes.

Hints:

• Use regular tea such as Lipton or Red Rose. They contain the tannic acid needed for refreshing the eyes.
• Always use fresh and clean products around the eye area.

Got a black eye? Now what?

People get black eyes for many reasons - falling, car accidents, hitting your head - but once you get one, what do you do?

I've heard that it helps to put a slab of meat on the eye. Bad idea! Bacteria in the meat can lead to an eye infection.

Put a covered ice pack on the eye for a few minutes every 30 minutes for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling ... Good Idea!

Wrap your bag of ice in a paper towel or thin towel to help prevent skin damage from the ice. Good Idea!

Cover the black eye with concealer, then mineral powder foundation.....Good Idea! - this way you won't scare the little kids!

A little secret for smooth, even, and sheer eyeshadow application

I just don't feel complete without my eyeshadow, but I would like a better way to apply it. It's just not as smooth, even and sheer as I want it to be.

If this sounds like you, try this technique.. Lightly load your brush with eyeshadow, flick the brush handle with your finger to remove excess powder, then rub the brush on the back of your hand. You are now ready to apply color to your eyelids.

Experiment with this technique, adjusting the depth of color to meet your preference.

Differences of shimmer, matte, satin and frosted eyeshadow...

You have heard the terms shimmer, matte, satin, and frost used when describing eyeshadow, but what are their differences?

Shimmer:
Sheer coverage with a subtle sheen and hint of sparkle.
Dark shimmers add drama to the eyes without the harshness of the deeper toned mattes.
Highlight and bring forth darker areas of the eyes with lighter shimmer colors.
Often used directly under the eye brows.

Matte:
Mattes have a higher concentration of color than frosted, satin and shimmering eyeshadow.
Mid-tones are used to create the "natural" look.
Mattes are often used on photography subjects.
Works well on mature and youthful skin.

Satin:
Less shimmer and sparkle when compared to frosted and shimmering eyeshadow.
Works well on mature and youthful skin.

Frosted:
Opaque coverage with sparkles of white or silver.
Pastel colors are most common.
Frosted eyeshadow has a tendency to settle into fine lines and wrinkles. Avoid on mature skin.
Reserve frosted eyeshadow for younger skin.

Making Eyes Look Larger

To make your eyes look larger, line the bottom lash line with a lighter eyeliner than the what you use to line the top lash. Dark eyeliners along the bottom lash makes the eyes look smaller.

When lining the lower lid, begin at the outside of your eye and end at the center of your pupil.

When lining your upper lash, carry your line slightly upwards at the end. Bringing your liner down at the end of the eye will make your eyes look droopy.

Kohl trivia

I was curious why so many cosmetic companies sell eyeliner, eyeshadow and mascara using the color name "Kohl".

Egyptians used a dark powder mixture of burnt almonds, lead, oxidized copper, ochre, ash, malachite, ore and/or other ingredients and called it Kohl (don't try this at home). It was an early version of mineral makeup.

Egyptians colored their eye brows, and the upper and lower eyelids with Kohl, extending it way beyond their eyes.

Egyptians believed Kohl reduced eye infections and was a remedy for restoring poor eyesight.

Puffy Eye Makeup Tips

Upper eyes that are puffy, whether naturally, from lack of sleep, allergies, or excessive crying require a special technique.

Avoid frosted and dark eyeshadow on the eye because they highlight the puffiness - just what you are trying to avoid.

Eyeshadow

1. Use an eye primer to "fix" eyeshadow to the eye lid. This helps to decrease transfer of the eyeshadow to the lashes and eyeshadow wears longer.
2. Use a light color, such as cream, on the eye lid.
3. Use a subtle matte brown eyeshadow on the crease of the eye and upwards to just below the brow bone.
4. Leave the area just below the brow naked.

Eyeliner

Instead of using eyeliner over the entire upper eye lash root line, which can magnify eye puffiness, apply eyeliner only to the outer one-fifth of the root line or don't wear any. If your eyes are very puffy, you may look better without eyeliner.

Eye Lashes

Curl your lashes.

Try water-proof mascara on your lashes to avoid mascara transfering from your lashes to the puffy section of your eyes.
